Nigeria's rich history before colonization dates back to around 2000 BCE. The Nok people, known for their terracotta sculptures, were one of the earliest known civilizations. The Kanem-Bornu Empire (700-1376 CE) and the Hausa Kingdoms (1400-1800 CE) were prominent empires in the region. The Oyo Empire (1300-1896 CE) and the Benin Empire (1180-1897 CE) also played significant roles. These empires developed complex societies, traded with neighboring regions, and had their own systems of government. The region was also influenced by Islamic and traditional religions. Before colonization, Nigeria was a diverse and vibrant collection of kingdoms and empires.
