Nigeria played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade. The country's coastal regions, particularly the Niger Delta, were major slave-trading hubs. The Portuguese established trade relationships with Nigerian kingdoms, such as the Kingdom of Benin, and later, other European powers like the British, French, and Dutch, also got involved. Nigerian middlemen and rulers, including the Obas of Benin and the Aros, facilitated the capture and sale of enslaved people to European traders. Estimates suggest that millions of enslaved Africans were shipped from Nigeria to the Americas between the 15th and 19th centuries.
